Firefighters Warn Evacuations May Be Necessary

Posted: 6:20 pm EDT April 23, 2009Updated: 6:42 pm EDT April 23, 2009

Firefighters announced new information Thursday afternoon about a wildfire in east Orange County. The now 1,100-acre fire has been burning for days between Bithlo and Christmas along State Road 50.

The fire has jumped the line several times Thursday, but never threatened any homes. However, the Orange County Sheriff's Office announced late Thursday that people who live east of the brush fire should get important documents and items packed up and ready in case an evacuation is necessary.

The sheriff's office said Thursday evening that, if the fire continues to move east and reaches the high power lines, residents will have one hour to evacuate homes.

"This is the worst it's been," resident Tracy Bearden told Eyewitness News on Thursday.

Bearden was so afraid of fire moving closer to home, she made a u-turn when she saw the thick smoke on Fort Christmas Road. She has a farm full of animals she wishes she could evacuate, but Wednesday state troopers shut down the road to keep residents away from danger.

"You can't just say, 'I'm going to go gather up a hundred head of cattle,'" she said.

Thursday afternoon, the wildfire was mostly under control, but a wind shift in the wrong direction could change that. The main concern for some is the smoke that was dangerous for drivers and unbearable for residents Thursday morning.

"Even though the door is closed, we're breathing it inside," Christmas resident Hector Rubert said.

The Division of Forestry is using 16 bulldozers to cut fire lines and keep the fire from spreading closer to homes. Rubert didn't want to leave for work, but has his cell phone to keep in touch with his wife and children and they know what to do if the fire moves in.

"I put the hoses and told her, 'Look, you got shovels, call my dad and just anything you see just make sure you spray the roof with water,'" Rubert said.
