Firefighter Losing Job Gets Death Threats

Job cuts in Orlando's fire department are causing new problems. To save money, the city is cutting 342 jobs, including 72 firefighters, but one of those firefighters is now getting death threats.

The Lake Mary Police Department has assigned an officer, a detective and patrol units to monitor Matt Magee's home and family. Officers stepped up patrols after the Orlando firefighter started receiving death threats.

"I have a family. I'm gone 24 hours and, for them to be alone, it's frightening," Magee told Eyewitness News.

A week ago Magee started a Facebook group called Save OFD. Magee was one of 47 firefighters who is going to lose his job in October due to city budget cuts. He started the group to raise awareness about the layoffs and it already has close to 10,000 members.

Magee thought everyone was a supporter, until he got some disturbing death threats. Someone called him in the middle of the night and repeatedly said, "Do you want to die?" and then cursed.

"All three phone calls had an automated voice. It sounded like celebrity phone calls. You could hear someone clicking the mouse like they were right next to a computer," Magee said.

Magee has no idea who could be making the threats. He thinks someone is upset about the Facebook page.

"Intimidation, maybe, to frighten me to take the page off. That's all I could get from it," he said.

But Magee said he's not going to take it down. He has a family to support and doesn't know what he will do if he loses his livelihood.

"I love Orlando. I don't want to lose my job, so I'm going to do whatever I can to fight for my job," he said.

Lake Mary police do believe the threats have to do with the website, but detectives did not want to give any details because they are working on making an arrest.
