VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. -- A 'no alcohol' policy on Volusia County beaches could change soon. County leaders are looking into their alcohol rules Tuesday night. You can drink on the beach in Flagler and in Brevard, but not in Volusia County. Alcohol is against the rules on Volusia County beaches, but that doesn't stop people from bringing it.One family admitted it wasn't ice tea they had in their cups."We're adults and we're having fun and that's all that matters and the kids are ok and we have somebody to drive for us, its no big deal," said visitor Lisa Castillo.Similar opinions have prompted the Beach Advisory Board to take a new look at the policy. It could end the ban or allow alcohol in non-driving areas or during certain hours. It's come up before, but the Beach Advisory Board chairman says he isn't convinced it's a smart move."I was dead set against it then. I'm dead set against it right now," said Dave LaMotte, Beach Advisory Board.Dave Lamotte says he knows people drink on the beach, despite the rule. However, he says allowing it, could increase problems with crowds, water safety and another controversial issue, beach driving."Now you've created a problem, not only for the beach patrol, but you've also created a problem for your local police departments, Ormond, Daytona Ponce Inlet, New Smyrna," he said. But there are places to drink at the beach, full bars; places to get beer and you barely have to step off the sand to go find it.Some beach visitors don't see the problem with bringing their drinks a few feet further."You still have to look out for other people. It's the same thing it's just on the beach," said visitor Darcy Godwin. The Beach Advisory Board's opinion carries a lot of weight, but any change it makes would have to be finalized by the County Council.
