Casselberry Faces $300,000 Budget Shortfall

Posted: 5:51 pm EDT June 19, 2009Updated: 6:48 pm EDT June 19, 2009

The City of Casselberry is facing a serious budget shortfall. Casselberry is about $300,000 in the hole.

Monday, city commissioners will meet to decide if they should continue examining the possibility of cutting their fire department.

The city would then pay for service from either Seminole County Fire Rescue or from another city.

It's a move that some say will lengthen response times. However, some homeowners say if the city were smarter with its money, the possible cuts would not be needed.

They point to a $2 million project that runs along 17-92 and one of the biggest issues is a boardwalk that doesn't even go around the lake.

The $2 million lakefront park and a $700,000 boardwalk, doesn't go all the way around the lake.

"I think that sounds like a waste of money to me, you could be putting people back to work you could be getting jobs back on the streets," said resident Bill Craig.

Bob Goff was the mayor for four years. He was voted out and now wonders how the city could go forward with the plan.

"Apparently since I've been out of office, they've re-arranged money and found $700,000 wow, to put a boardwalk up," said Goff.

A city commissioner said grant money was used, but admitted some did come out of city coffers. With the potential for the fire house closing and jobs lost, any cost seemed too high to some.

"I think we should choose the police department, fire department over a sidewalk, boardwalk whatever it is," said resident Jerry Shaffer.

However, one resident said he was happy to see the new addition.

"I think it's great, all the clean up of all these buildings, kind of the older stuff out of the way and putting some new stuff in," said resident Chris Meyer.

City commissioners will decide if the boardwalk will mean the end to the fire house.

The City Commission will vote on Monday, whether to continue talking about consolidating fire services, but Commissioner Susan Derner said no final decision will be made.
