Tornado Victim Says City Is Fining Them

Posted: 5:16 pm EDT June 23, 2009Updated: 6:16 pm EDT June 23, 2009

It's been an entire month since a tornado damaged homes in a Casselberry neighborhood, but there are still houses that remain in shambles.

However, some homeowners say they're now being fined by the city for trying to keep a roof over their head. Many homeowners say they're being victimized by the city.

One resident has set up an RV in her back yard and she can't believe her own city is fining her for setting up a temporary shelter.

Diane Ward can't forget the terror when a tornado roared through her home.

"I was very upset. I was very upset. I mean, I was trying to call them right then and that's when I got the letter," she said.

For the past month, the wards have been fighting their insurance company to get enough money to repair their home of 13 years, which they say is currently unlivable.

There is no roof, water pours in when it rains and mold is growing almost everywhere.

"You couldn't live in there. We're not even allowed to have the power on in there," said Ward.

That's why they were astonished to get a code violation from the City of Casselberry only two weeks after the storm.

They're being fined $250 per day for having the RV on their property that's not licensed for it.

"It's ridiculous is what it is. You know, they're trying to get money out of us and for what reason? You know, why? Why take money from us when we need to rebuild out house?" she asked.

The Wards say as they wait to rebuild, they want to be on their own property to keep a close watch on their unsecured home.

"I'm not going to leave my property. You know, I'm just not going to leave," Ward said.

So far, Casselberry officials say the RV does violate city regulations and the fine stands.

The Wards can appeal it, but Eyewitness News learned that one family in a similar situation tried that recently and was turned down.
