ORLANDO, Fla. -- A small house occupied by sex offenders burned to the ground in Orlando Tuesday. Eyewitness News learned that the man who accidentally started the fire on Pompeii Road was a registered sexual predator.Miguel Cobian, 76, had to be rescued from the burning home that he rents along with two roommates, who are also sex offenders.Residents learned that the neighborhood is crawling with 37 registered sex offenders. Neighbors said they don't have much sympathy for Cobian."But it's not a poor pitiful old man. He shouldn't have been in this neighborhood to begin with," said neighbor Ashley Widdis.Widdis lives two doors down and is responsible for her young niece and nephew."We won't let them outside," she said.According to the Federal Department of Law Enforcement, there are 37 registered sexual offenders within a mile of Cobain's address on Pompeii Road. There are 108 within a two-mile radius. Many residents, especially with small children, said that they've been working to get the predators out of their neighborhood. However, Eyewitness News learned that a predator or offender in Orlando or unincorporated Orange County can live anywhere they want, even close to a day care.Unlike cities like Winter Park or Ocoee, there are no proximity laws. So unless it's outlined in their probation, the offenders are free to move anywhere they want.Brent Huffman helped pull Cobian from the fire. He didn't know that Cobian had a criminal history and said at the moment, it didn't matter."I'm not here to judge. That's God's job. It's a human life. I did what I felt was the right thing to do at the time," said Huffman.Since he's been displaced, Cobian has 48 hours to register with his probation officer and give his new address. The Orange County Sheriff's Office says he has already filed that notification. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement does have a system to alert residents when a sex offender moves into their neighborhood.FDLE sent out its one-millionth e-mail through the Florida Offender Alert System. It has been around since March 2008.The emails can alert people about sex offenders in their neighborhood or residents can track a specific sex offender any time he or she changes addresses.
