GROVELAND, Fla. -- Eyewitness News has discovered that Groveland Police recently stopped an off-duty Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy for suspicion of driving drunk. Police, however, did not arrest the deputy. Now, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office has launched its own internal investigation into the incident.According to a police incident report, Deputy Rodney Blevins was driving on Highway 50 in May when he slammed on his truck brakes in front of Chaos Tattoo Shop. According to the report, he started yelling obscene words at two women in front of the business. That is when an officer pulled him over. The officer said Blevins had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breathe. His eyes were also glassy and he was also unsteady on his week. Grainy and dark dash camera video from the police officer’s car showed the off-duty deputy performing a field sobriety test.Groveland police say Blevins passed the test, so the officer only wrote him a ticket for reckless driving and let him go. Eyewitness News asked police if that was the same treatment any other resident would be given.“That is same thing anyone would be given. If they do not complete the tests and it establishes probable cause that they are impaired then they would be arrested for that,” said Lt. Jesse Baker with the Groveland Police Department.Officers say Blevins admitted he had been drinking. He also made it known that he was deputy and also acted aggressively.Even that was not enough for an arrest; officers still did not allow Blevins to drive. His parents came to pick him up.Groveland police offered Blevins a breathalyzer, but since he was never under a DUI arrest that test was not required and the deputy turned it down.Throughout the whole ordeal, Blevin’s 11-year-old daughter was in his truck.Blevins has been the subject of five other internal investigations. Eyewitness News asked why he is still with the sheriff’s office.“If you were to look at each one of those internal investigations individually, one of them was not sustained as in it was found to be unfounded, the others that were founded were minor policy violations, he was given corrective action,” said Jim Vachon with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.Corrective action included reprimands and counseling. Blevins has been with the sheriff's office since 1997.
