SANFORD, Fla. -- Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents broke up an identity theft ring that was based out of a Sanford home Monday. Agents say the main suspect was so successful that he had to hire employees to handle all his victims. The suspects got away with thousands of dollars and many times the victims never suspected a thing. The theft ring suspects would only use the victim's identity once and then move on to steal another person's identity.Agents took computers that produced fake checks and they took out a machine that created a drivers license with their picture on it.According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Leonard Eugene Malone was raking in $10,000 per week by stealing the identities of Central Floridians.FDLE believes Malone and nearly one dozen of his employees cashed 300 checks in the last two weeks for $600 each. However, the suspects weren't always stealing the checks, they were also making them.Eyewitness News learned that they were breaking into community mailboxes, stealing credit card statements and other personal mail and would use that information to make fake drivers' license as well as creating checks. Then the suspects would cash the checks for $600 using the fake ID at Wal-Mart, Winn-Dixie and Publix.Agents say the ring of accused thieves would use the Fake IDs only once, so no one would know their identity had been stolen. If the suspects found a check in the mailbox, they would use their own picture and would make a fake license in that person's name and cash the checks too.Malone was on federal probation at the time of Monday's bust for doing the same thing. He most likely will face racketeering charges.
