Bus Drivers Say They Were Short-Changed

Posted: 11:49 am EDT June 30, 2009Updated: 12:10 pm EDT June 30, 2009

Orange County schools are having trouble keeping track of bus drivers' money. Some workers are getting short-changed, while others are being over-paid.

Summer school bus drivers in Orange County say they are livid. They say the district keeps messing up their paychecks.

"My suggestion to them was that they turn the entire payroll system to the third grade math students from Mollie Ray and just maybe they can get it right," said a bus driver.

The county cut hours to pay for some 300 drivers during the summer, but some say accounting bungled the changes.

Drivers are guaranteed five hours of work per day. However, some say they are getting paid for less than five hours, while others are getting their regular yearly rate; therefore they're getting paid too much.

Workers were also told some of their pay would be delayed.

"So far I promised the electric company I would have money on the eighth and I promised my insurance company for my car," said another bus driver.

Some drivers claim the county has been messing up their checks for years.

"Who made the error?" asked WFTV reporter Q McCray.

"It's an administrative error," replied district spokesman Dylan Thomas.

After more than four hours of checking with payroll, transportation and several other departments, the spokesman confirmed they had a problem with paychecks, but couldn't really explain why.

"No one who I was able to reach today could explain it to me," said Thomas.

"If they're controlling all this money down there, are they making the right decisions and are they adding and subtracting properly?" asked a bus driver.

The school spokesman said the district is going to get to the bottom of the mistakes and it's going to make sure the bus drivers get all the money they have coming to them.

The district says payroll will make sure the summer bus drivers' July paychecks are complete and correct.
