Theft Charges Prompt Lake Wales Employee's Resignation

A Lake Wales city official has resigned his position after charges that he used city money to buy a battery for his own boat.

The Lake Wales News website reports that a police investigation revealed Jerry Torrence, assistant to the city manager, spent $70.44 of city money to purchase the marine battery. A police spokesman said Torrence will be charged with petit theft.

City Manager Tony Otte said he has already started the search for Torrence's replacement.
