OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. -- An Osceola County jail guard faced a judge Thursday. Michelle Hung was arrested after being accused of trying to help an inmate escape.

Investigators believe Michelle Hung was so instrumental in the escape attempt last week that she's facing 13 felonies, the same charges as the inmate she was trying to help.

Once a corrections officer, now the one in shackles, Michelle Hung said little in front of a judge. Investigators say the 44-year-old Osceola County jail officer was an equal player in 28-year-old Angel Santiago's escape attempt last week.

She's accused of helping get a gun inside the jail to Santiago, where he held a guard hostage before another officer stepped in and foiled the escape.

"That's what's pitiful. That's a shame. They should be better people than that," said Bill Shroyer, jail supplier.

In fact, Hung's personnel file revealed discipline problems during her nine years at the jail, most recently for leaving handcuffs unattended in a dining area.

In 2004, Hung was reprimanded for putting a male inmate in protective custody against the orders of a superior.

"Are you requesting the services of a public defender?" a judge asked Hung.

"My family is working on getting an attorney for me," she replied.

Investigators say Hung developed the plan to help Santiago escape while on medical leave from the jail in June.

"Is there any reason to believe these two were romantically involved?" asked WFTV reporter Eric Rasmussen.

"At this point we have not disclosed the nature of the relationship. We can only tell you she met him while he was incarcerated at the jail," responded Twis Lizasuain of the Osceola County Sheriff's Office.

Hung is being held on no bond. Jail officials said they are reviewing the incident.
