DAYTONA, Fla. -- Some of Central Florida's smaller colleges are scrambling to pick up programs that were cut by the University of Central Florida. Two weeks ago, UCF cut five programs in order to save $6.1 million.Daytona sees a real opportunity in one of the cut programs. Daytona State College has hired 10 members of UCF's staff to work in the Engineering Technology Program, which was cut by UCF.Rooms full of manufacturing machines are waiting and so are wide-open computer labs, ready to handle an influx of engineering students that could come when UCF's Engineering Technology Program becomes Daytona State's program."We just thought it's already there. It's a lot easier to just move it 50 miles," Academic Vice President Frank Lombardo said.Daytona State College snapped up the program, its director and staff after UCF announced it was cut last month. The move came ahead of the UCF's medical school opening and saved the university $1.7 million."Hasn't been available to us in the past and hasn't been available to Volusia and Flagler counties and this pool of students," Vice President of engineering programs Stan Sidor said.As Daytona expands its offerings, the school sees it as an opportunity for a flagship program. Students can continue many classes online and pay a tuition that will be 15 percent less than what they pay now."The students can continue and never miss a beat," Lombardo said. The school said it's already getting calls and emails from students. Classes are set to start in August of 2010.
