ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Hundreds of people showed up for a town hall meeting in Orlando to have their voices heard in the health care debate, but most of them never made it in the door. The meeting, hosted by Congressman Alan Grayson, was held in a union hall that had a capacity of 125 people. Inside the hall, the crowd was passionate but under control. Outside, however, it was nearly a mob scene.AT THE SCENE: Emotions Boil Over At Grayson's Town Hall MeetingBefore the meeting even started, hundreds of people were lined up outside, but only 125 could get in. People lined up outside the meeting venue were fired up and chanting."He picks hall with 128-seats, fills half of them before we get here," concerned citizen Mike Dwyer said. Those who did get in were able to speak their peace to Congressman Grayson. The comments alternated between those for and those against the health care reform bill now being considered in Congress."To cover everybody is frivolous," one woman said."We need a complete overhaul; I hope you support public option," another constituent said.Congressman Grayson said his goal is to bring peace of mind to people by lowering costs and providing better access to coverage."The days when you could get health care if you didn't need it, but couldn't get it when you needed it are over," Grayson told the roomful of constituents. However, what was going on inside was quickly overshadowed by the chants from protesters outside. One man even tried to force his way inside the hall despite the doors being closed."You're not allowed inside," said a security guard to the man trying to get inside."It's a public meeting. It's a public freaking meeting and he's my Congressman," the irate man said."It's very exciting, I'm so happy to see people engaged. They're involved, they care again," Grayson said.Grayson said that, despite what went on outside the town hall meeting, he considers the night a success. He also said that he plans to hold more town hall meetings on the health care issue in the future.Meanwhile, Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmos plans on holding two specialized meetings. She will hold a tele-town hall Wednesday evening at 6:20pm. Constituents should call her office to register for the phone conference. Then, on Friday afternoon at the Tavern in the Garden in Port Orange, Kosmos will hold a meeting on the topic for small business owners only.
