Parents Say Kids Have Dangerous Walk To School

Posted: 2:41 pm EDT September 11, 2009Updated: 6:45 pm EDT September 11, 2009

Some Orange County parents say their children have to dodge traffic on a dangerous walk to school. Some students at Clarcona Elementary School (see map) have to cross busy McCormick Road with no crossing guard and the district has no plans to change things.

The intersection of McCormick and Damon roads (see map) is causing Adrion Webb a lot of worry. That's why he called Eyewitness News.

Webb was walking his daughter Arianna to Clarcona Elementary earlier this week when he had to pull her out of the path of an oncoming car.

"I was here; it's not like she was by herself," Adrion said.

Now, she's riding to school.

"The cars go very fast," Arianna said.

When Eyewitness News arrived Friday morning, there was an Orange County deputy on duty. He wasn't assigned; he's just heard concerns from parents like Remmi Goyens, who would like to see a crossing guard posted at the intersection.

"There's lots of heavy traffic and some days there's not even a police presence," Remmi said.

There are signs clearly posted that there's a crosswalk, but the posted speed limit is 50 miles per hour,

"It's very busy," parent Tony Garrick said of the road.

Orange County Traffic Engineering told Eyewitness News the intersection still doesn't meet the criteria for a crossing guard. A study was conducted the day after Arianna was nearly struck and, on that day, only one child used the crosswalk accompanied by a parent. Eyewitness News spotted three children Friday morning.

The county looks at the number of vehicles on a roadway, the width of lanes, hazards, and the number of kids using a crosswalk before recommending the sheriff's office assign a crossing guard. If more children used the crosswalk, the county might reconsider.

"As a parent, you don't want anybody's child getting hurt just trying to get to school," Adrion said.

Orange County has 180 schools with roughly 400 crosswalks. Orange County Traffic Engineering said it's trying to use the county's resources wisely.
