$1.5M For Fake Suspension On 408 Bridge

There are new questions about how the Orange County Expressway Authority spends your toll money. The new 408 bridge heading into downtown Orlando over Lake Underhill is no suspension bridge, but $1.5 million toll dollars are being spent to make it look like one.

Road-widening construction is complete, but it's about to add some expensive extras, including towers and cables like a suspension bridge. An Expressway Authority spokeswoman told Eyewitness News Friday that they could have changed the design, but really felt it would help showcase the city.

Of the $77 million being spent on the widening project, $1.5 million is being used to spruce up the bridge. Two towers connected by five suspension cables will give the road all the makings of a suspension bridge, except it doesn't hold anything up.

"I don't think looks means that much when it comes to money," motorist Steve Browning said.

Since an April rate hike, Browning has been paying an additional 25 cents per toll booth for his ride on the 408. He says he'd gladly trade the trimmings for his quarter back.

The Expressway wants the bridge to be an entrance way into the city. So at 75 cents a toll, it'll take two million people to pay for itself. But that's a price tag Joanna Connor doesn't mind looking at everyday. The new bridge will be her front yard view.

"So as far as what I think about the bridge, I think it'll do a lot about the area. I think hopefully our property value will go up," she said.

The $2.1 million pedestrian bridge your tolls paid for ought to help that out, too. So, while Browning says the view may be great, he says the project looks bad for the Authority.

"It doesn't sound very good. I mean, people are tired of paying tolls anyway," he said. "If it doesn't do anything, they could use the money elsewhere, I guess."

Meanwhile, Monday, two additional lanes on westbound 408, between Goldenrod and Primrose, will be open for your commute.

Channel 9 exposed a lot of the Expressway Authority's controversial spending habits that came to light as it raised tolls this spring. Drivers now pay an extra quarter at every toll booth.

The Expressway Authority hopes the extra cash will generate at least $40 million to cover the shortfall created by fewer drivers on the toll roads. Prior to that toll hike, the agency built an extravagant new headquarters that's at least 20,000 square feet bigger than it needs.

Employees with high salaries had them frozen earlier this year and there were calls for Expressway Director Mike Snyder's resignation. Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty even formed a blue-ribbon commission to reduce so-called wasteful spending.
