Agents Conduct More Raids On Vitamin Company

Posted: 6:02 pm EDT September 16, 2009Updated: 6:42 pm EDT September 17, 2009

Eyewitness News learned more details about other raids linked to an Oviedo company that sells nutritional supplements. Federal agents raided the IDS Company on Alafaya Trail (see map) Wednesday, but did not say why.

Federal agents did not stop with a raid at the IDS office in Oviedo. They also raided the two local owners' homes in Seminole County. Also, IDS has had trouble recently with its whey protein products.

Federal undercover agents took boxes of evidence from the IDS Sports office Wednesday and carted off antique cars. They also raided owner Joseph Savas' Winter Springs home.

The Savas' neighbor, Dwana Hodge, said she saw federal agents at their home Wednesday.

"I saw a truck load up a small vehicle," Hodge said.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) will not say anything about the raids. ICE says there are no public documents at this time concerning the case.

IDS's CEO David Dixon would not say whether the investigation involved steroids and neither would the company's spokesperson, who released a statement late Thursday afternoon saying it's cooperating and that its products are safe and distributed in compliance with the law.

GNC stores sell IDS products. Two months ago, the Food and Drug Administration recalled some of IDS' whey products because of tampering. A blade was found in the container and IDS said it cut ties with the manufacturer of the tainted product. IDS said it does not believe the raids had anything to do with the tainted products.

There have been no arrests in the case.
