Electrical Problem Shuts Down Disney Monorail

There was more monorail trouble at Disney Wednesday. The trains that run to the Magic Kingdom and the Disney resorts were shut down because of an electrical short.

A Walt Disney World monorail sat vacant Wednesday while ropes and Disney employees blocked the entrance ramps to get on board.

"The monorail system is down right now, so a ferryboat will be able to take you over to the transportation center,” a Disney worker announced Wednesday.

Officials say trains to the Magic Kingdom and the company's resorts stopped running around 10:00am Wednesday after an electrical short caused one monorail carrying about two dozen guests to come to a dead stop.

"They just had it shut down, so we went to the ferry,” said Tom Burchell, who is visiting from Missouri with his family.

With two of the monorail lines out of service, they and thousands of other guests had to ride ferryboats to get to the Magic Kingdom and buses to get to and from the resorts. Early Wednesday afternoon there were no backups.

While there were reports of some smoke after the system shorted out, officials say nobody was hurt and guests stranded on the train that stopped were towed to the station after a short delay.

Guests Eyewitness News talked to believe Disney was being extra careful before re-starting the system.

"Yeah, it makes sense, because I did hear about the accident a few months ago,” park guest Tammy Burchell said.

The July 5 accident killed a monorail pilot when two trains collided after a problem with the switching system, but guests Eyewitness News talked to weren't worried about the safety.

The monorail to and from Epcot was still running Wednesday. A spokesperson says they're not sure when the other two lines will reopen.
