VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. -- The same dry conditions and gusty winds Central Florida is getting Monday are being blamed for fueling wildfires that popped up across the area on Sunday. At one point, fires were burning in New Smyrna Beach, Titusville and Cocoa.The fire started in the middle of the woods in New Smyrna Beach and firefighters blame most of it on the dry conditions and wind.AT THE SCENE: Crews Battle 3-Alarm Wildfire In New Smyrna Beach VIDEO REPORT: Dry Conditions Fuel FiresThree different firefighting agencies battled the ten-acre fire Sunday afternoon near the intersection of Pioneer Trail and Hammond Street (see map)."I look up and I'm like, 'Holy crud,' and it was just a freaky site," said Matthew Rutkowski.At one point, 40 homes were threatened by the flames.Kristine Rutkowski and her family live in a neighborhood nearby and could not help but to worry."That's a lot to me, two acres. Okay that's a little uncomfortable, because it can jump the road pretty easy and be over here before you know it," Rutkowski said.Firefighters say the closest homes were one-quarter mile away from the flames, but crews were able to keep it under control.Another fire that popped up in Titusville was only two acres. Another in Cocoa burned between five and ten acres. Firefighters were able to get both fires under control without problem.As of Sunday night, State Fire Marshal investigators still had not yet determined the cause of the fires. They returned to the scene Monday to continue the investigation.
