911 Call Released In Attempted Baby Smothering Case

Posted: 5:48 pm EDT October 23, 2009Updated: 6:12 pm EDT October 23, 2009

Police say a Titusville woman wanted her baby dead and did nothing to stop her two-year-old from trying to smother him. After the mother eventually called 911, paramedics showed up in time and the baby survived.

The 911 dispatcher tried to tell the mother how to perform CPR. Christina McIntyre pretended to give the child CPR, but later told detectives it was all an act.

The incident started unfolding in early October when the child stopped breathing and McIntyre calmly called 911.

“What’s the address of the emergency?" asked the operator.

"4445 Coolridge Avenue," McIntyre replied.

Christina McIntyre waited 40 seconds to tell a 911 operator her 11-month-old son wasn’t breathing.

"My son was crawling around playing with his older brother. I ran to the kitchen to grab juice. I came back and he is on the floor lifeless," she described.

"Is he breathing ma'am?" asked the operator.

"No," she answered.

The 911 operator then tells her how to do chest compressions.

"You are going to pump hard and fast 30 times," said the operator.

McIntyre pretends to follow her instructions.

"How many am I counting? Sorry,” McIntyre asked.

"30 times," the operator answered.

"Ok. 29, 30, done," she said.

Police say she later admitted she didn’t administer CPR and told investigators her life would be easier if the child died, partly because she couldn’t afford to pay to put him in daycare.

"Can you feel or hear any breathing?" asked the operator.

"No," she replied.

Paramedics showed up three minutes after McIntyre called 911, gave the baby oxygen and saved his life.

The baby stopped breathing because his two-year-old brother smothered him with a blanket in their Titusville home. Police say McIntyre watched it happen.

McIntyre didn’t have much to say as she was arrested Thursday night. Friday afternoon she held her head in her hands and cried as a judge denied her bond.

Detectives figured all of this out because McIntyre spent the last few weeks going to area hospitals trying to convince doctors her son had breathing problem.

Doctors became suspicious and called police.

In an even stranger twist, late Friday Eyewitness News learned there was another issue with the children.

The Department of Children and Families removed them last week before McIntyre was arrested based on a separate child abuse investigation.

McIntyre is locked up at the Brevard County jail.

Both children are with relatives and police say the baby is fine.

Their father lives in Texas. DCF has not been able to get in touch with him.
