MARION COUNTY, Fla. -- Marion County deputies are hunting for a fake cop who they say is driving around the Silver Springs area with a Crown Victoria. The suspect even has a cage in the back-seat like an authorized police vehicle. Officers say the man handcuffed a driver Thursday night. The fake cop scared an Ocala teenager, handcuffing him and pretending to have found bags of drugs in the teen’s car. The next night, he stopped a pregnant woman and took her drivers license. One victim described the fake car as having flashing blue lights and said it's a dark-colored Crown Victoria, just like an unmarked Marion County sheriff's car.The victim described the fake cop as a middle-aged, white man with a belly and a goatee. “We're not sure of their intentions at this point. It could be I.D. theft or robbery or something even worse,” Marion County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Jenifer Fisher said.Dimas Roman, 19, told investigators the man in the burgundy Crown Victoria that pulled him over Wednesday night, told him he had faulty tail lights.Roman didn't, but still agreed to a car search. The fake cop handcuffed 19-year-old Dimas Roman and put him in the back of the car with a makeshift cage. The whole thing lasted almost 45 minutes.Thursday night around 11:0, a pregnant woman was stopped under similar circumstances, four miles away in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Ocala. However, this time it was by an SUV, similar to what Ocala officers drive. The man held her driver license for several minutes before returning it. The sheriff's office recommends calling 911 if you're stopped by someone you're unsure of. “Our communications center has the location of each deputy, where they are and deputies are supposed to signal when they're conducting a traffic stop,” Fisher said.Officers recommend putting your flashers on, stopping at a well-lighted area and they won't mind if you ask for identification. Also, officers that would pull you over would be in uniform and most likely at least one marked car would be involved in a stop.
