Rip Currents Claim Man's Life During Busy Halloween Beach Day

Posted: 8:37 pm EDT October 31, 2009Updated: 8:51 pm EDT October 31, 2009

Lifeguards pulled a man out of the Atlantic Ocean and rushed him into an ambulance after he got caught in a rip current Saturday off Ormond Beach, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead minutes later.

The man, whose name has not been released, was one of dozens of people caught in rip currents across Volusia County this Halloween, which proved to be a very popular day at the beach due to the unusually warm temperatures.

“Typically on a weekend in the summer, we’ll have 100 lifeguard towers open,” Volusia Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn said. “Today, I believe we have 18, which is still way over our budget for this time of year.

The drowning proved emotional for the crowds on the beach. A large group gathered together to pray for the victim as rescuers tried to save him.
