160 Laid Off At Brevard County Company

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- There are 160 people out of work in Brevard County Wednesday. DRS Technologies in Melbourne and Palm Bay cut its workforce Tuesday.The company is a defense contractor and works hand in hand with the military. DRS makes products used in war, like infrared technologies and computers.Employees Eyewitness News spoke with said they saw the cuts coming.“It’s tied to the recession and all that stuff. It's hit everybody. The company has treated us very well,” DRS employee Roger Olson said.A company spokesperson issued this statement to Eyewitness News: "This reduction is being implemented to align our workforce to the current business forecast."The cuts are the most recent in a string of bad news for the Space Coast.In the last month, Boeing announced plans to lay off 330 people who work on the shuttle's checkout, assembly and payload processing services program.The United Space Alliance, which is NASA's largest contractor, cut 250 people. Also, 7,500 people will lose their jobs as the space shuttle program ends.Brevard County's unemployment rate is just over 11-percent.
