LAKE COUNTY, Fla. -- The unemployment rate in Lake County is 12 percent, but despite the number a smaller than expected crowd attended a job fair at Lake-Sumter Community College in Leesburg Tuesday. The employers inside the gym at the college said they certainly expected hundreds of people to be waiting to get in, considering the unemployment rate is at 12 percent. It was only four percent two years ago.Despite the high unemployment number, there were only 30 or so people waiting to get in to speak with employers.Workforce Central Florida said in 2008, they saw 700 people at the same job fair. There are only one dozen employers with entry level jobs paying from $8 to $20 per hour. Eyewitness News talked to Linda Hallock who says this is the second job fair she's been to in one month, and its frustrating because it seems no one is really hiring.“They'll say, ‘We appreciate you coming in, we thank you for your time. However we can't give you an answer today, we'll call you.’ For the most part its all just spin. Don't call us, we'll call you,” Hallock said.Workforce Central Florida said all the employers they have at Tuesday’s fair do have at least one opening within their company for qualified candidates.
