Woman Says She Shot, Killed Suspected Home Invader

Police want to know if an Orlando woman was justified when she shot and killed a man that she said was an intruder, on her front porch.

The woman says three children were in her house off Raleigh Street in Carver Shores, when a man tried to kick down her front door. Police aren't saying if they believe the woman's story.

The homeowner told Eyewitness News she shot him in self defense, but police say this was no random attack and they're not convinced the woman was the shooter.

Crime scene detectives spent hours looking for clues at the door of 28-year-old Shavon Shaw in Orlando.

Her family says that's where the mother of three young children started shooting, when three men tried to break in on Wednesday night.

“Like anybody else, she tried to defend herself, her family and her children,” said Trances Kirby, the Shaw’s mother.

The bullets hit and killed one of the men, 25-year-old Mark Clark.

Eyewitness News found he had a 12-page rap sheet of arrests for robbery, battery and drug possession. The other two suspects got away.

But as detectives took a closer look, even tracing the trajectory of the bullets through the door, Orlando police announced the case was not a home invasion like family members had claimed.

Some neighbors said Shaw and the man she claimed she shot may have known each other.

“I don't think there were any drugs involved, but for somebody to break into a house there has to be a reason, so it had to be something,” neighbor Chris Thomas said.

Detectives got a warrant to search inside the house, but police won't say what they were looking for.

Shaw’s family says she had a permit for her gun, but some of them even seemed unsure about exactly what happened.

“It might be a home invasion,” the homeowner’s father, Wade Shaw said.

“Was she in trouble?” WFTV reporter Eric Rasmussen asked.

“She wasn't in no trouble, no,” he replied.

Even more bizarre, Mark Clark, the man who was killed, listed an address just a few houses down on the same street.

Police now say somebody else in the house Wednesday night could have been the shooter, but they won't say who that might be.

If police do find that the woman was the shooter, Florida has two laws protecting her right to shoot.

The first is called the Castle Doctrine, which allows people to defend their families in their own homes.

The second is part of the Stand Your Ground law, which was passed in 2005 and allows any citizen to use deadly force when they see a violent felony being committed.
