Zoo Announces Birth Of Rare Bonobo

A baby bonobo has been born at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, marking the fourth birth of the endangered apes in more than five years.

The unnamed female bonobo was born Nov. 6 to to 24-year-old Kuni, who has been in Jacksonville since 1993.

Bonobos are endangered great apes native to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Zoo spokeswoman Gina Stiles says the mother and baby may be viewed Saturday, weather permitting.

She says the mother is proud, showing off her baby to other bonobos and keepers.

The father is unknown. Zoo officials plan to do a DNA paternity test when the baby is older.
