SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. -- The Villages is supposed to be a quiet place where people go to retire, but Thursday night it was the scene of a shooting and a standoff. The woman accused of shooting her husband is in jail and she won't be allowed to bond out.

The woman said she was fed up with her husband trying to control her, so she shot him.

While 51-year-old Denise Textor faced a judge, investigators searched her home for answers and a weapon. She is charged with attempted first-degree murder after shooting her husband.

“They've been married 17 years. They retired down here from New Jersey,” said Lt. Steve Binegar, Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Dennis Textor is a former law enforcement officer and Denise told deputies he was controlling, but investigators say there's no history of domestic violence, at least until Thursday night when she shot him twice in the chest with a .38-revolver while he was taking a shower

After Dennis was shot, he crawled out the bathroom window, ran through the front yard into the neighbors garage. That's where he called 911.

Denise surrendered after a more than 4-hour standoff with 30 law enforcement officers and the SWAT team, but not before causing the retirement community significant concern.

“They’re no crimes. Don't worry about it. And then, boom, this happens and it’s quite shocking,” neighbor Cookie Gibbons said.

So far this year, the closest thing to this incident is an aggravated battery in June and the Sumter County Sheriff's Office says there are never more than two of those a year.

Dennis Textor was in stable condition Friday at Orlando Regional Medical Center. He is on a ventilator, but investigators say they should be able to interview him over the weekend.
