ORLANDO, Fla. -- It was an Internet romance and it led to an attempted murder and a suicide in Orlando. Police say a woman, scorned by a man she thought was her online lover, showed up at his Middlebrook Pines Apartment (see map) late Sunday night with a handgun. The man survived the shooting, but then the shooter killed herself.

Paula Harris, 30, drove all the way from the Atlanta, Georgia area, according to investigators, and checked into the Holiday Inn at Universal Boulevard and Sand Lake Road (see map), just over four miles from 44-year-old Andre Barboza's Orlando apartment. What Harris allegedly did next was a total surprise to everyone, even the friends she convinced to drive her over there from the hotel. Orlando police say Harris waited for Barboza to come home and ambushed him. Bullet holes riddled the outside wall of Barboza's apartment and a bullet hole was left in his fence.“I heard, like, five, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop,” said Lynda Vaughn, the victim's neighbor. That was followed by screaming and then more shots, witnesses said.“I was shocked. You don't think that's gonna happen in your neighborhood,” Vaughn said.At one point, Harris was allegedly standing over Barboza with the gun. Instead of killing him, police say, she shot herself and fell to the ground. Orlando police say Harris and Barboza met online. Police say Harris was 5-foot-2 and weighed 285 pounds. They say she sent someone else's photo to Barboza claiming it was her. Then, the 30-year-old sent a photo of herself when she was 16. Police say Harris eventually sent a real photo and explained the fakery by claiming she was terminally ill with cancer.“He was being nice and wanted to support her, so he continued to communicate with her,” explained Sgt. Barbara Jones, Orlando Police Department. The two had exchanged addresses and, when she showed up, she confronted him about not calling her back. Barboza told police he did not recognize her when she ambushed him in the dark.Obviously, this is Barboza's side of the story and police are still investigating. They believe the Georgia woman was aiming her handgun at his groin. He is recovering from two gunshot wounds, after having surgery at Orlando Regional Medical Center.
