KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Some homeowners in a Kissimmee neighborhood say the city has cut off access to their neighborhood, and is forcing them to drive out of their way just to get to their homes. The city put up barricades on Palmetto Avenue at John Young Parkway to control traffic. Even though the barricades do cut down on traffic, they're a major inconvenience for residents.Forget rush hour traffic. Kurt rose says the new roadblock, which means there's only one way into his neighborhood, causes him headaches on his way home from work."It's annoying. It's a hassle to have to go around everywhere," said driver Kurt Rosa.Kissimmee's city council voted to put up the temporary barricades at John Young Parkway (JYP) and Palmetto Avenue after neighbors complained about traffic cutting through their neighborhood. The drivers went from JYP to Clyde Avenue and headed to Lakeshore Boulevard in the downtown area, which is a quick way to avoid the gridlock at JYP and Emmett Street. The detour took Eyewitness News crews 1.2 miles out of the way and 5 minutes to complete. A big difference from the couple of hundred feet Rose was traveling originally. He crosses train tracks now too."I've sat 6 to 7 minutes waiting for a train to go by so I hope nothing life-threatening happens, because those minutes will count," he said.An occasional train is fine with Mike Scarborough. According to one study 2,500 drivers on average used the shortcut. Now it's empty and safer for his daughter."I can let her do what she's doing now without worrying about the traffic," parent Mike Scarborough said.City officials are analyzing how the roadblock affects traffic in the area for 30 days before making the barricades permanent or coming up with another solution. The city is also considering blocking off Palmetto Avenue at JYP and installing speed bumps to deal with traffic.
