Science Project Mistaken For Bomb At Walmart

A Palm Bay Walmart was evacuated and shut down for more than two hours Wednesday morning after a science experiment was mistaken for an acid bomb.

Law enforcement shut down the Walmart on Malabar Road (see map) after a suspected acid bomb was found at the stores entrance. The device, officers say, did look like a real acid bomb.

No one was allowed in the Walmart and employees were lined up outside and the parking lot was emptied. At around 10:00am, officers reopened the Walmart store after safely removing and determining the device not to be a threat.

More than one-dozen law enforcement officers and the Brevard County Bomb Squad took over the Palm Bay Walmart Wednesday morning. They thought an acid bomb had been planted at the front entrance.

“Every one was out of the building. It was all blocked off and they had fire trucks,” employee Hector Bajuelo said.

Customers and employees waited for two hours while law enforcement tried to figure out what the device was. A few pellet shots later, the bomb squad discovered the false alarm.

“It also looks like a kid’s science fair project; it is what is called a cyclone device. You turn it upside down and it spirals,” bomb technician Jay Church said.

The bomb squad, however, says they have to treat every situation with the same importance. Acid bombs can take off fingers and do significant damage to structures.

“Better safe than sorry. They have to do what they have to do, you know?” Bajuelo said.

Law enforcement says they are not going to pursue the person who planted the device there. One reason is the cameras don’t get a good shot of the door and the other reason is they've already spent enough taxpayer money on the ruse.
