ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- It's one of Central Florida's ritziest cities, with celebrities, million-dollar homes and now a big problem with wild animals. A pack of coyotes is running around Windermere. Many homeowners told Eyewitness News their pets have been attacked and eaten. Dozens of people have called animal control in the past few weeks. When Becky Plante saw a coyote across the street from her house with a kitten in his mouth, she tried to save it, but was too late.“I ran out and he took off and he left the carcass there,” Plante described.Plante lives in Windermere near Main Street and has seen a pack of coyotes roam the area since the summer. Animal control set up traps and visited the area 37 times, but they've been unable to capture the animals.A spokesperson said the coyote population is growing in Central Florida. Last year, coyotes were spotted near the Orlando International Airport. Plante says that is alarming and something needs to be done, because the coyotes are terrorizing neighborhoods like hers.“I have two kitties that are gone, Peewee and Spock, and they have both been found and I also found three other dead cat carcasses,” she explained. The coyotes may be living in a wooded area on Parkridge Gotha Road, where other wildlife can be found. Those at Winderemere Union Church have also seen the coyotes.Parents and teachers are concerned about the children. The coyotes were just yards away from the preschool. The animals typically hang out in the wooded area next door.“He was trotting across the path and he stopped and I stopped and turned around as fast as I could so I could get out of there,” parent Erin Rohe said.Rohe said seeing the coyote once is enough to put her on guard and she just hopes she doesn't see them again.Animal control says if it catches the coyote, it will most likely work with Fish and Wildlife to try to relocate it. If a coyote is aggressive, it will be euthanized.
