Shannon Burke agreed to a plea deal Friday that will send him to jail for six months. He could have received a five-year sentence.

The judge accepted the plea from the former Real Radio host who is accused of shooting his wife and her dog during a drunken argument earlier this year. The couple has since reconciled and Burke insists he's working to improve their relationship.

“That's part of recovery, yeah. That's part of the deal. There's a ways to go with my amends, but I'm making them one at a time,” Burke told WFTV reporter George Spencer (images) | (video) after a previous hearing.

As a result of the plea deal, Burke will spend six months in the Seminole County jail and be on supervised probation for three years. He also can’t have any alcohol and must spend 100 hours working at an animal shelter. Burke must attend AA meetings and counseling, as well.

“It’s the beginning of the end of this and the beginning of the rest of my life,” Burke told WFTV after the hearing Friday.

Initially, a judge told Burke he was not to have any contact with his wife. However, she told the judge in court Friday that she wanted Burke to be allowed back in her life. The judge granted that request.

Burke cannot have a firearm again until after his probation. He can begin serving his sentence whenever he wants, as long as it starts before December 31.
