Ocala National Forest Turning Into Junkyard

OCALA, Fla. -- Tons of debris litter the Ocala National Forest and law enforcement says the problem is getting worse. Those agencies don't have a budget to pick up the trash nor the manpower to catch lawbreakers in the act and the result is the desecration of a national landmark. You'd expect to find old fuel tanks, busted chairs, tires, and carpet remnants in a junkyard, but people were either too lazy or ignorant to take their trash to a dump, so they polluted the Ocala National Forest.“It's such a beautiful place. And it’s abused. Hopefully, this will wake people up,” said Ray Muennich, Boy Scouts of America.Rangers cleaned up years of illegal dumping in the forest just two years ago. They removed more than 438,000 pounds of garbage in the largest cleanup in the park's 100-year history, but some people responded by trashing it even more.“You take care of one problem and we have two more pop up,” Jeff Jauschneg said. The piles begin just past the "no dumping" signs and piles of yard clippings are spreading invasive species all through the forest."A lot of people will just drive down the road and dump their little piles,” Jauschneg said.Rangers suspect the recession is driving people to the forest to drop garbage for free.“Unless they catch them in the act, they can't do anything about it,” Muennich said. And there is no money for another clean up, so volunteers like Muennich try to clear out what they can.One of the most frustrating things for law enforcement and volunteers is that, just miles from the forest, there are legal dumps and recycling centers.Jauschneg recently found a working meth lab in the forest and county law enforcement shut that down. But with a 385,000-acre forest, they don't have the manpower to stake out junk and the dumpers know it.The next clean-up is scheduled for January 23.
