City Rallies Residents To Fight School Rezoning

Posted: 5:07 pm EST November 20, 2009Updated: 6:26 pm EST November 20, 2009

The city of Deltona is sending out tens of thousands of postcards and fliers trying to rally residents to fight the Volusia County School Board. The board is supporting a plan to move mostly Deltona students to a new high school scheduled to open in Orange City next year.

Community groups are going to pass the flyers out to students as well.

Deltona's take is their residents just aren't aware of the new boundaries, even though there have been meetings about it for months.

Eyewitness News asked parents of some of the 3,000 students at Deltona High School how much they knew about the plan to send about half the kids to another school next year.

"I knew the new school was going to be built, but I didn't know anything else about it," grandparent Cathy Suttles said. “I haven't heard anything and my granddaughter's mother is usually on top of it."

Deltona's mayor said that's why they're spending $6,000 to send postcards and fliers to all 80,000 residents.

They threaten longer bus rides, dismantled athletic teams and groups of friends being torn apart if the plan goes through.

"It's not right that they're going to split up our friendships, when our friends are the one's that keep us in school and keep us away from stuff," student Anthony Penna said.

But even students well aware of the issue observed that residents seemed like they don't really want to fight.

"Some people want to, but parents won't do it for them. Won't help them," student David Howard said.

Meeting rooms have been mostly empty for the three public meetings and one vote so far.

The district made phone calls to all parents, advertised on websites, newsletters, and signs. They also changed their plans in response to people from Lake Helen and DeLand who did put up a fight.

Deltona's mayor said the meeting times have been too early and working parents just aren't able to make it. The school board votes for a final time December 8.
