MAITLAND, Fla. -- Bats are making a smelly mess in one Maitland neighborhood and now people who live there want the state to do something about it.The bats are nesting under the Maitland Boulevard overpass on Mechanic Street (see map). The bats fly out in large numbers every night and leave their droppings everywhere. Some neighbors say the smell from the droppings is just too much to bear."The bat poop, oh my God the smell. Don't you smell it? It smells terrible. It's giving me a headache," resident Bessie Arnold said. The State Department of Transportation says it can't kill or easily move the bats because of wildlife regulations. Next week, it plans to pressure wash the overpass to get rid of the smell, but leave the bats alone.
