Once Homeless Pastor Helps Homeless Stay Warm

Temperatures are going to dip into the 40s Thursday night and thousands of men and women in Central Florida are enduring the cold without homes.

In West Orange County, there's only one church that'll take in the homeless on a cold night and it doesn't take any money from the state.

It just has a pastor with a very unique story.

John Adams and his friend Butch, sing about hope and help. Five weeks ago they were desperate, but then Pastor Scot Billue started ‘Matthew’s Hope.’

“They saved me. I’d all but given up,” John Adams said.

Matthew’s Hope was supposed to be a temporary homeless shelter during January’s freezing temperatures, but when more than 30 people showed up one night, Billue knew he had to do more.

Now, it is a place where the homeless can come every Tuesday for a shower, haircut and medical attention.

“They are real people and sometimes a simple smile is all it takes,” Billue said.

Because Matthew’s Hope is only five weeks old, they aren't an official non-profit organization yet, so all the donations come purely from the community and they get no government funding or grants.

Seven local churches form the volunteer base. The Church of Christ of West Orange hosts the program. There aren't shelters in West Orange County, so many of the homeless in the area live in the woods.

Billue says there are 20 homeless camps within walking distance of the church, and each one with two to 17 tents.

“There are hundreds of us out here and most of us you'll never see, because we blend,” Adams said.

Billue's been down that road; he was homeless by age nine. So his program also offers a sense of humanity he knows people like John Adams need.

Word has spread and his numbers have grown. Last week Matthew’s Hope helped 250 people.
