ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- A trapper is looking for a 400-pound menace who attacked and killed a dog. Neighbors fear that the alligator will go after their children.
The trapper will come back Tuesday night to check bait lines and homeowners are keeping a close eye on the waters. They don't want any other families to re-live what happened here.
All day long, neighbors came by to pay tribute to a dog named Spock (photo left). The 10-year-old Doberman was part of the family."It was scary with having a 3-year-old and a 9-year-old," says Denise O'Masta, who lives two doors down and her backyard also faces the river. "We haven't been out in our backyard since Sunday."
But trapper Jerry Flynn has. Tuesday afternoon he added fresh bait and he's confident he'll get this gator. "It's personal now. I have a dog and I don't know what I'd do if lost to an alligator."And this one has proven he isn't afraid of people. But he hasn't scared Monroe Moss away from the water. "I catch a lot of large brims out here."He's says he'll stand back from the bank and keep an eye out for little bubbles. "Oh, I gets away then."The neighbors hope Monroe is the only one that gets away. They want the gator caught.Construction workers built a temporary dam at the end of the street, so in the last two weeks the water here went from about 6 inches to about 6 feet. Neighbors say that's why they've never seen gators here before. As for the family that lost their dog Spock, a viewer called after our story Monday night and offered to donate a Doberman puppy. They're thinking about it, but say they need some time first to heal.
