CLERMONT, Fla. -- There are 2,100 homes in a Clermont golf course community that are all filled with retired people and they pay a premium for their community clubhouse.WFTV learned the clubhouse in the King's Ridge Community was deemed unsafe, possibly because of an over-sized air conditioner. Some people who live in the gated community are hot under the collar because of a problem they believe was caused by brand new and possibly larger air conditioning units."They determined it was an unsafe situation," Clermont Building Official Mark Grenier said.A few months ago, the new AC units were installed on top of the community clubhouse. Last week, the clubhouse ceiling started sagging about three feet.Maintenance workers then noticed a problem with the building trusses. Neighbors say it looked like the roof was caving in. The city shut it down, declaring it unsafe."I think they were heavy or something, I really don't know," homeowner Gail Sheldon said.Sheldon isn't too worried since she doesn't use the clubhouse often, but others call it an outrage. The game room, ball room, conference rooms, the fitness center and even the pool are off limits. The community has hired an engineer to try to figure out if the AC units are to blame and to brace the building to keep it from getting worse."Air conditioning people were the last people on the roof. Did they cause this?” WFTV reporter Jeff Deal asked.“Maybe not necessarily, that's why they're looking into it," Grenier said.Meanwhile, the homeowners continue to pay more than $300 a month in association dues without the benefit of the large clubhouse. The city says it expects the engineers will be done by the end of the week, but because the community has to deal with city inspections and insurance companies, it has no idea when the clubhouse will re-open.
