GPS Software Can Detect Red Light Cameras

More red light cameras are going up around Central Florida every day. One Ocoee man showed WFTV’s Q McCray how new GPS software warns him when the cameras are watching.

Every time he hears an alert, he knows there's a red light traffic camera around.

Frederick Roberts recently added new software to his GPS that shows him where the cameras are 1,200 feet before he rolls up to them.

"It will remind you. ‘Don't forget there's a speed trap.’" He said. “I'm sure it prevented me from being ticketed."

It also reminds you when you're near a school zone, DUI checkpoint, or railroad tracks. The software can be added to your Smartphone as an App too. The cost is $39 a year or $100 for a lifetime membership.

If a driver gets caught speeding in a school zone they could be fined more than $500. Drivers could get a $125 to $150 ticket for running a red light.

"No one can afford $150 in one shot anymore," Roberts said.

Roberts hasn't paid a fine yet and he intends to keep it that way.

Most local law enforcement agencies WFTV spoke with said they don't have an issue with the software.
