Sentencing Begins For Man Caught With Child Porn

He was a school bus driver, a youth minister and he often took boys camping. However, Robert Perez is looking at some serious prison time for child pornography. Robert Perez's sentencing hearing started Wednesday and WFTV learned he could face a more serious sentence because of all his involvement with children.

Perez even wanted to open a daycare center. Detectives said his life revolved around children; they said that was no accident and now they want him to go to prison for life.

Even though Perez has spent the last eight months in jail after being caught with 300 videos and 25,000 pictures of child porn on his home computer. His neighbors remember him well.

“I just stayed away from him. I didn't trust," neighbor Lloyd Allen said.

Perez was convicted of molestation in 2000 for what he did to two boys ages 7 and 9. He's now awaiting sentencing on this latest conviction for possessing and distributing child porn, and federal prosecutors think he should get life.

“He shouldn't be around kids, period, in my book," Allen said.

Prosecutors couldn't agree more. Perez only got six years probation for the 2000 incident and this latest conviction is only his second. But they say his life is structured around kids. He was a school bus driver in Brevard County in the late 90s and was a youth councilor at a Titusville church where he would take boys camping.

Perez tried to start a daycare and even got a male roommate, with two young boys, to move into a Cocoa home. His behavior was so odd, neighbors began to take notice.

"A little strange to have a little child around him," Allen said.

Inside a federal courtroom Wednesday, Robert Perez tearfully admitted to the crimes and that he was embarrassed, but never once did he apologize for what he did. Investigators said those two boys, now teenagers, are not coping with what Perez did to them.

"They should hang him," Allen said. "They should throw away the key, that's what I think."

This case is so unusual because he has never served prison time for his crimes, only probation, and now federal prosecutors want Perez to go away for life.

The judge continued the sentencing until Thursday 9:00am.
