Nine Arrested In Gun Smuggling Ring

Nine people from Central Florida were arrested in a gun smuggling ring that involved Honduran drug cartels.

The group would legally buy dangerous assault rifles and handguns from Central Florida stores then smuggle them out of the country for profit.

Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) agents say the suspects placed the guns in boxes filled with household items and clothes. Then they shipped the packages to Honduras.

“There was something going on we knew that much," neighbor Anisia Burgos said.

Anisia Burgos was shocked when she found out her neighbors are accused of smuggling high-powered guns to drug cartel members and modifying weapons inside an Orlando home.

“All you here is a bunch f***ing kids screaming and yelling and every now and then you heard a pop we didn't know what that was,” Burgos said.

So far nine people have been arrested. Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms started investigating the ring after they linked crimes in Puerto Rico to guns that had been sold out of Central Florida.

Agents started pulling records and discovered one Palm Bay man had purchased more than 500 guns in a one-year period. He bought the weapons from out-of-state dealers and several local gun shops.

According to beachside arms owner, Rick Barrie, it is legal for anyone in Florida who passes a background check to purchase an unlimited amount of firearms.

“Its called a multiple purchase you just fill out the paper work and send it off to ATF and that's what agents say he did,” Barrie said.

The Palm Bay man then sold the guns on the black market for thousands of dollars a piece. Federal agents say some of his customers included drug lords from Honduras.

They wired the money to Florida and then members of the gun ring shipped the weapons back. Some of the weapons included AR-15s, AK-47s and 5-7s.

Agents say cartel-led drug trafficking rings refer to the 5-7s as police killers because of the armor piercing rounds.
