Girl In Amber Alert Found In Attic, Father In Custody

ORANGE CITY, Fla. -- A 6-year-old girl was found safe Thursday afternoon ( raw video | images) in the attic of an Orange City home after an Amber Alert was issued out of Wildwood to locate her. The girl’s non-custodial father was taken into custody after allegedly taking her and the girl was finally returned to her mother overnight.

"If it wasn't' for everyone working together, we would probably be still looking for her," relative Robbin Mayfield told WFTV.Karmen Barfield was last seen earlier Thursday in Wildwood. Her father, 25-year-old Chance Barfield, is accused of taking the girl from his ex-girlfriend after a physical fight, despite not having custody."I think his intention was to emotionally hurt mom, by taking her away from mom," Mayfield said.Deputies were told Barfield was likely fleeing to a home in Orange City. The Ford F-150 deputies believed Barfield to be driving was located in the driveway of a home on Graves Avenue (see map) late Thursday afternoon. At that home, deputies said, they arrested Barfield’s father and an individual with him for hindering the investigation. They provided deputies with information that the girl and her father could be located at a home on Edwards Avenue.Blocks away, at the home on Edwards Avenue (see map), deputies massed, some with dogs and guns drawn. Deputies told WFTV they were met with resistance by the female homeowner and her son; both were taken into custody (see images).
Investigators told WFTV that Barfield and his 6-year-old daughter were found hiding in the attic of the Edwards Avenue home. Deputies pulled the girl from the attic; she was reportedly hot and sweating, but otherwise in good condition.Deputies said Barfield was combative and aggressive, but they were able to take him into custody (raw video | images)."What happened was, she's addicted to pills. She took my kids, I got her off Medicaid, she got pissed off, she took my kids," Barfield told WFTV as he was led away in cuffs.It's unclear at this time what charges Barfield will face.Barfield is currently on probation for grand theft. He's been arrested 13 times since 2005. His other arrests include robbery with a firearm, aggravated battery, and domestic violence.Barfield is expected to appear before a judge at 1:30pm Friday.
