LEESBURG, Fla. -- Overnight, Leesburg Police patrolled a neighborhood area, searching for a 300-pound lion on the loose. Police received a call Sunday night that a lion was roaming in the area along Pembrook Drive and Middlesex, near U.S. 27.
Apparently, the lion's owner was driving it around when it jumped out of her vehicle and took off out of sight. Two hours later, the lion showed up in a family's back yard. It was just laying next to their car.A little boy made the unusual discovery and ran into the house to tell someone. Just then, the 300-pound lion ran the other way, bounded over a fence, then disappeared into the woods. That's the last anyone has seen of it.We talked with Leesburg police Monday morning and they say there is not an active search going on right now. There are officers patrolling the Stock subdivision and the surrounding area, but they say the search will not pick up until the lion comes out of the woods and shows himself again.Fish and Wildlife officers and Leesburg Police are approaching this one very carefully and played it safe before calling off the search overnight."We're not actively going into the woods. We don't want to flush anything out for public safety reasons," explains Joy Hill, Florida Fish and Wildlife.Leesburg Police are telling people in the area to go on with business as usual as they head out to work and school. They say, just keep an eye out for the lion and they'll take over if there's a sighting.
