Thieves Steal Expensive Birds From Orange County Pet Store

Posted: 11:58 am EST November 6, 2003

Police are on the lookout for some birdnappers. The birds, worth $5,400, were stolen from a store in Waterford Lakes.

Nine birds were taken from Petland. The string of thefts happened in the past six weeks and now the owner is asking for the public's help.

On an average day, about 20 birds are on display. The birds vary in size and breeds. Storeowner Cindy Parks says the bird thieves will come into the store on a busy day. They'll watch the store employees and, when someone is not looking, the person will snatch the birds and then leave.

Parks says there's a black market for the birds and that's why so many of her birds are gone.

"What outrageous me the most, if these people claim to care about the birds, then they wouldn't take them away from the environment they are in. They would know and they wouldn't sell them on the black market," says Parks.

All of the birds that were stolen are less than a year old. If the birds aren't taken care of properly they can die.

If you have any information on the birdnappers, please call Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS.
