MAITLAND, Fla. -- A local woman is frustrated and disappointed after a local dating service failed to deliver on some "great expectations."
She claims when she tried to legally back out of a contract, workers stalled, sticking her with a 35-hundred-dollar bill!It turns out that she's not the only one who has had problems with the dating service. At least half a dozen people have filed a complaint with the better business bureau about the dating service Great Expectations in Maitland. One cocoa woman says she's joining that list because the sales people give a slick pitch, but don't deliver."She said there was one particular one that she knew was just right for me, she says your gonna love him," said Shelia Snyder.Snyder says she was promised the moon when she signed up with the dating service. She put down several hundred dollars to join."She said the right words, she made promises. I was taken by it," Snyder says.Snyder also says she was excited about her prospects, that was why she signed a two-year deal. She took pictures, made a videotape and even got a postcard about a potential bachelor wanting to meet her.But when she called the office to get information about him, the receptionist wouldn't take her call."I was promised no problem, you can call in. Had I been told you can't get info over the phone, I would not have signed up for this at all," She explained.Snyder says she lives in Cocoa Beach and it's too far for her to drive to Maitland. That's why she made it clear to Great Expectations she had to call for information.Great Expectations says Snyder was mistaken."I don't know why she says that, and we explain that you come in and you come in once or twice a month," said Jeanie Neary of Great Expectations. After months of unreturned phone calls and letters, Snyder says she wanted to cancel her membership. Her contract states a balance of $2,390 but then she got a letter in the mail stating she owes $3,555 dollars."I figured I made a mistake, they didn't give what they promised me, so I was asking for a refund, I want the contract annulled," says Snyder.Great Expectations says they made a mistake and Snyder only owes $2,390.According to the Better Business Bureau the company does not qualify for a satisfactory rating and this isn't the first time there have been problems with Great Expectations. Two years ago, Action 9 reported about similar complaints from consumers who couldn't get out of their contracts with the company. At that time, the business was under different ownership.
