Thousands In Counterfeit Cash Showing Up Across Central Florida

Posted: 5:07 pm EST March 4, 2004

Thousands of dollars in counterfeit cash recently showed up in cash registers all over Central Florida and police aren't sure who's spending the fake bills.

Police say the fake bills are being used at major retail stores.

The bills were made in South America and then smuggled into the United States.

So far, more than $13,000 has been passed throughout Central Florida. The $100 bills have been used in Osceola, Orange, Lake and even Marion County.

The bills started showing up in January and more keep coming in.

Police say, someone will usually walk into a store, buy a low priced item and then get genuine cash back.

Police don't have any suspects at this time.
