"Lotto Scam" Costs Woman $8,000; Suspects On The Loose

Posted: 5:17 pm EDT April 21, 2004

It's a scam you may have heard of before but, if not, pay attention, because it just took one Orlando woman for a whole lot of her cash and police say the duo that pulled it off are still out there.

It all started when 53-year-old Rosa Ortiz was loading up her groceries. A woman claiming to be an illegal immigrant in need of help approached her. Soon after, a man approached as well and the three begin to talk, only to learn that the immigrant woman had what appeared to be a winning lottery ticket.

Minutes later, they all got in Rosa Ortiz's car and hit the road and went right to her Wachovia bank where Ortiz and the strange man went inside.

The man told her he just got off the phone with the lottery commission and that, if they put up $20,000 as collateral, they could collect on the winning ticket immediately, for a lofty sum of $182,000.

So, after about a half-hour inside the bank, she withdrew $8,000 in cash. Then, the two got back in the car and, while driving, Ortiz put her money in what she said was a big bag already containing the strange man's portion of the collateral for their big lottery winnings.

The next stop was a Publix. The woman with the ticket said she needed some medicine, so Ortiz went in to get it, only to return to her car 10 minutes later to find both of the strangers missing.

Ortiz told police she wasn't worried they were gone, because she had the bag of money, or at least, what she thought was the money. When she opened it up, her cash was gone and all that was inside were stacks of newspaper, cut into the size of dollar bills.

Police say this is hardly a new scam, they see it all of the time. They just want to send out a renewed warning to not be taken by this scam.
