Investigators: Body Found Along I-4 Part Of Deadly Crime Spree

Monday, May 3, 2004

Surprising new details were released Monday about a body that was found along I-4 on Sunday. Investigators think it was part of a deadly crime spree that stretched from Central Florida To North Carolina.

Four people are dead and two people were kidnapped.

Its started when investigators could not identify the body on I-4. Little did they know at the time, their hunt for a killer would take them across the southeast.

The body police found Sunday on I-4 gave investigators little to go on. It wasn't until 20 hours later they would find out this crime was just the beginning for a man spinning out of control.

Investigators say Douglass McClaymont barely knew his victim, William Bowes, after killing him and leaving his body in the woods. He went to his house and robbed it, then kidnapped Bowe's wife.

After kidnapping Deborah Bowes, McClaymont drove to Franklin, North Carolina to find his own wife, Theresa Martinez. He found her at the home of JoAnne and James Maney. He killed them both and abducted his wife.

With two women in his truck and three murders under his belt, McClaymont headed for Tennessee. He nearly made it to the border, but police caught him first. After a chase, the fugitive took his own life.

Investigators say, they're lucky it ended before it got worse.

As for the two women in the truck, authorities say they are shaken but physically fine.
