Hundreds Of Medical Records Found Tossed Outside Office

Thursday, May 27, 2004 – updated: 5:34 pm EDT May 27, 2004

Hundreds of patients' medical records were thrown out at an Altamonte Springs doctor's office. And, a deputy says, the doctor lied about how it was done.

The sheriff's office is investigating to find out if that's the case, because, as the sheriff's spokesperson told Channel 9, the timing is questionable.

A doctor reported having hundreds of medical records stolen. But then we hear from his staff that he ordered them to take records home and destroy them.

Then, Thursday, a worker in the same building in question, found files in the dumpster out back, piles of patient records with social security numbers and other personal information, all tossed aside like trash.

The sheriff's office is investigating whether or not Doctor Parviz Brauman did anything criminal or, at the very least, violated administrative procedure.

"He's alleging that they're not his records, that they're somebody else's records and he was holding onto them. But, ultimately, someone messed up here and just dumped those records into a garbage dumpster and you can't have that happen," says Steve Olson, Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

On top of that, the doctor could face charges for filing a false police report if it's proven that he ordered files destroyed, rather than his claim that they were stolen.
