VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. -- Lightning is being blamed for starting a fire that destroyed a Volusia County home.
The homeowner says there were no storms in the area when the fire started Monday. But eyewitnesses saw the bolt travel down the chimney. Then flames shot up when it hit a gas line.Tanker trucks from as far away as Flagler Beach came to help fight the fire because there are no fire hydrants in the area. There area the house is in is not incorporated into Ormond Beach. There was enough water to fight the fire, but the homeowner wonders if a hydrant would have helped."I don't know if it would have saved my house. Couldn't have hurt," says homeowner Elaine Dunlap.Several firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion at the scene. One was taken by ambulance to Halifax Medical Center.
