Property Still Gone After Stranger Moves In Family's Home

Posted: 11:56 am EST November 19, 2004

A woman who returned from a vacation to find someone else living in her house testified in court that she was missing about $100,000 in property. Beverly Valentine

Beverly Mitchell returned from a two-and-a-half week trip to Greece last month to find that another woman had moved into her home while she was away.

Beverly Valentine, 54, was later arrested and charged with burglary.

"I was ready to strangle this woman," Mitchell said after the woman was discovered in her home. "How could you not know someone lives here?"

During a preliminary hearing for Valentine on Thursday, Mitchell told the court Valentine put up her own decorations and had new tile installed.

"There were decorations and family photos, of her family, not mine," Mitchell said.

Mitchell said the woman had the electricity switched over to her name and also moved in a washer and dryer. She brought in her own furniture, clothes and decorations and even repainted rooms in the house.

"Now we have portraits hanging on the wall that we didn't have before," Mitchell said. "And we've got all kinds of new appliances."

Mitchell also said clothing had been taken out of her closets, items were removed from the kitchen and her jewelry was gone. Jewelry items reportedly were recovered from inside Valentine's vehicle, which was parked in Mitchell's driveway.

"It's the most bizarre thing I've ever seen," Mitchell said.

Mitchell estimated the total value of the missing items was $100,000. Some of the property has been returned, but she testified that other items are still missing.

Investigators at the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said at the time that they were unsure why Valentine moved into the woman's home.

"She's never met her before so we really don't know why this lady picked this particular house," said sheriff's Lt. Bobby Holmes.
